Hutchinson Technology inc. provided us with one their Inspectra tissue oxygenation monitors for our recent research expedition to Cho Oyu. The device was designed to monitor critically ill patients in hospital, particularly those who have sustained serious traumatic accidents. We were able to take advantage of its unique design and study changes in the amount of oxygen within muscles whilst people exercise at high altitude. The device was portable and robust enough for us to able to use it easily in the mountain environment.

Along with the monitor and special muscle probes, Hutchinson Technology provided a superb advice and support service. We will be continuing to work closely with Hutchinson Technology during our work next year on Mount Everest.
