Emeritus Professor of Physiology, St George's Hospital Medical School, UK

His research interests center on exercise bio-energetics, and the control of ventilation and pulmonary gas exchange during exercises in health and disease. In addition to more than 300 publications on these topics, he is author or co-author of nine books and monographs.

Among his academic awards: American College of Sports Medicine's Citation Award and Joseph B. Wolfe Memorial Lectureship; American College of Chest Physicians Distinguished Scientist Honor Lectureship; and the American Physiological Society Honor Award for Environmental and Exercise Physiology.
