Xtreme Everest's Prof Mike Grocott and Dr Sandy Jack have been working on a new cancer prehabilitation study which has received STP (sustainability and transformation partnership) funding and will be starting this year in the Wessex area.

Named The Wessex Fit-4-Cancer Surgery study (or WesFit for short), this region wide service will provide a clinical service in the guise of a randomised controlled trial of clinical effectiveness. Research into exercise intervention (such as that undertaken by the University of Southampton's Fit-4-Surgery) show that prior to surgery can have a benefit to the patient. Patients were shown to increase and/or maintain their fitness when taking part in a controlled, structured and supervised exercise programme, however implementation into "real world" services have been limited.

The project will be delivered by the team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust for the Wessex Cancer Alliance on behalf of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight and the Dorset STP.
