Altitude

Millions of people travel to high altitude every year whilst skiing, trekking, mountaineering or working. Many more live there, either permanently or seasonally. The lack of oxygen in the air that is experienced at altitude is a significant physiological challenge that impairs performance and can lead to serious illness.

Acclimatisation describes the process of adapting to this shortage of oxygen and we are interested in understanding more about it. This may aid travellers going to altitude and shed light on the way in which patients tolerate low levels of oxygen due to disease.
