Does hypoxia play a role in the development of sarcopenia in humans?
Xtreme Everest investigator Dr Liesl Wandrag has recently released a paper with other members of the team, looking at the involuntary loss of skeletal muscle which occurs when exposed to hypoxia at high altitude.
Entitled Does hypoxia play a role in the development of sarcopenia in humans? Mechanistic insights from the Caudwell Xtreme Everest Expedition the research undertaken looked at analysing the hypoxia induced body composition change of the participants of the CXE expedition back in 2007.
From the research it was possible to see that targeting certain pathways may offer new avenues for preventions and treatment of sarcopenia (fat loss at high altitude due to hypoxia).
