The Namche Community has recently opened a new health clinic in the town. This clinic is in addition to the Government funded clinic that opens for 6 hours each day. The Mountain Medical Institute has been entirely funded by local community groups. It has been built from prefabricated materials rather than the stone, typical of other Namche buildings. This makes it warmer and more resistant to damage from earthquakes.

The clinic opened about a month ago, and provides twenty-four hour healthcare to locals and visitors to the area. Within its walls it boasts an out patient clinic, an operating theatre, three-bedded ward, X-ray facility, laboratory and pharmacy. The facility is home to five members of staff, including Dr Abhyu, who gave up his free time to show us around. Not all of the facilities listed are fully operational yet, but community leaders are ambitious in their plans to ensure they will be in working order as soon as possible.

The Xtreme Everest team, collaborators from the University of Nebraska, and Duke University, both in the United States of America, along with our Xtreme Everest trekkers, donated unused drugs, research disposables, and other items at the end of the trip to the facility.
