In the autumn of 2005 a team of scientists and doctors undertook a climb of the North West Ridge of Cho Oyu (8201m) in order to achieve two objectives. Firstly, to obtain valuable high altitude experience in preparation for the Caudwell Xtreme Everest Medical Research Expedition and secondly to conduct a range of experiments and equipment tests at the extremes of altitude.

Cho Oyu Base Camp (4800m) can be reached by road in approximately seven days from Kathmandu. On the mountain, four camps were established: Advanced Base Camp (5700m), Camp 1 (6400m), Camp 2 (7100m) and Camp 3 (7500m).
